Culture of Conformity

It seems like everyone here lacks originality. Everyone dresses the same, talks the same, thinks the same. Anyone who is “different” in America is singled out and the “group” psychologically intimidates them to “conform” to the “accepted” ways of dress, thought, etc. It’s actually quite sad. I started thinking about this when a girl I work with told me “you know I really like your headscarf, I wish I could wear that sometimes, but I can’t”. Now, what would stop her from wearing a headscarf? In fact, many non-Muslim women do wear “Muslim” headscarves, and that doesn’t mean they’re Muslim, they simply might wear it for their religious views. However, because it’s “socially” not acceptable here in America to appear “different” than the mainstream you can’t wear what you want. You must wear what everyone is wearing. It’s so mindless and a form of mental slavery in my humble opinion. Why are people so afraid to be who they are? I do believe in the ideal America that you can be who you are, can be of any religion you want, and although in legality you can be who you are, the wider society coerces people subconsciously to give up who they are to be what they perceive to be more American. You find many immigrants for example, come to America and change their culture…not because they’re doing it out of love but because of the human nature to want to be accepted or some insecurities they have. It’s actually quite sad. You rarely see people with non-conformist ideas anymore in society. It’s like everyone is molded to be the same, and everyone is afraid to be who they are….tragically. I also think this starts in public schools, kids are thought from a young age not to question “authority”, and to be spoon fed what they’re taught. So people in a sense lose who they are at a young age. Anyways, that’s my observations for now. Please stop conforming and think.
